Israeli Soldier Killed in Rafah Attack, Ceasefire Reinstated
An Israeli reservist soldier was killed Tuesday in an attack by Palestinian operatives in the Rafah area of the southern Gaza Strip, prompting significant Israeli strikes before a ceasefire was renewed today.
Master Sgt. (res.) Yona Efraim Feldbaum, 37, a heavy machinery operator from the West Bank settlement of Neria, was killed when enemy snipers opened fire on troops and an army excavator in Rafah’s Jenina neighborhood around 3:45 p.m. local time. Following the initial sniper fire, operatives launched several RPGs, hitting an armored vehicle, though no further injuries were reported. This attack marks a serious escalation in the fragile peace process and raises concerns about the sustainability of the current truce.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) responded with “a series of significant strikes,” targeting dozens of terror targets and operatives, including commanders in Hamas and other groups. Gaza health authorities reported at least 104 deaths as a result of the strikes, though these figures do not differentiate between combatants and civilians.
