Oahu Resident Ditches Gas for Electric Vehicle, Advocates for Wider EV Adoption
A North Carolina farm upbringing led Cynthia Carlton-Jarmon to embrace electric vehicles, and she’s now encouraging others across Oahu to make the switch. Carlton-Jarmon, a recent convert to EV driving, shared her experience with Hawaiian Electric, highlighting the benefits of her Hyundai IONIQ 6, nicknamed “Esther,” and the need for expanded charging infrastructure.
Carlton-Jarmon’s introduction to driving began unconventionally, operating tractors at age nine and school buses in high school on her family’s farm. While initially skeptical of EVs, she was persuaded by her daughter to test drive the IONIQ 6 last December and quickly fell in love with its quiet operation and smooth ride. “It was love at first sight,” she said, describing the car’s black exterior and cyber gray interior. “I love the acceleration and how it hugs the road. It’s beautiful and so much fun to drive.” The transition to electric vehicles is gaining momentum as concerns about climate change and fuel costs rise.
Currently relying on public charging stations due to living in a townhome without charging access, Carlton-Jarmon noted a learning curve but found the process manageable with her daughter’s assistance. She praised the convenience of Hawaiian Electric charging stations, particularly the one in Salt Lake, and emphasized the need for more widespread availability. “More chargers, plain and simple,” she stated, adding that she’s actively trying to convince her homeowner’s association to install them. Charging costs have significantly decreased for Carlton-Jarmon, dropping from $150-$200 monthly on gasoline to under $100 for electricity. You can find more information about EV incentives in Hawaii.
Carlton-Jarmon’s positive experience extends beyond cost savings and convenience; she also values the environmental benefits. “I think about the grandchildren I don’t have yet, you know — about the kind of world we’re leaving behind,” she explained. She now actively recommends EVs to friends, church members, and even patients, sharing her enthusiasm for a cleaner, quieter future. Hawaiian Electric officials say they will continue to work with HOAs and residents to expand charging infrastructure and support the growing adoption of electric vehicles across the state.
