The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the city’s ruling party, won three seats, while the Indian National Congress and the All India Forward Block each claimed one. Despite the overall gains, the BJP lost two seats it previously held.
The by-elections were held in twelve wards – Greater Kailash, Shalimar Bagh, Ashok Vihar, Chandni Chowk, Chandni Mahal, Sangam Vihar, and Dakshinpuri, among others – after the seats became vacant when sitting councilors successfully ran for and won seats in the Delhi Legislative Assembly. The BJP failed to retain the Sangam Vihar A and Mundka wards.
The All India Forward Block secured a win in the Chandni Mahal ward. While the BJP lost ground in two wards, the party maintains a strong majority in the Municipal Corporation. Currently, the BJP holds 122 of the 250 seats, while the AAP has 102 and the Congress holds nine.
The outcome of these by-elections is unlikely to significantly alter the balance of power within the Delhi Municipal Corporation, but it does provide insight into voter preferences ahead of broader elections. The results suggest continued support for the BJP, despite some localized setbacks.
