Panthers’ Rico Dowdle Fined Over $14,000 for Touchdown Celebration, Launches Charity Fundraiser
Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle was fined $14,491 by the NFL yesterday for his touchdown celebration during Sunday’s 16-13 upset victory over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, and has pledged to donate the funds to charity.
Dowdle announced the fine via social media and subsequently launched a GoFundMe campaign to benefit the Children’s Home Society of North Carolina. “After much thought I’ve launched a GoFundMe for my fines. Key said I got three pumps but I guess the NFL disagrees,” he posted on X. He added that 100% of the funds raised will go to the organization, which focuses on supporting children in need of safe and loving families. You can learn more about their work here.
The penalty stemmed from Dowdle’s celebration after a third-quarter touchdown, which involved two pelvic thrusts – a reference to a 2013 “Key & Peele” comedy sketch satirizing the NFL’s rules regarding acceptable celebration movements. The celebration initially drew a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, impacting the subsequent extra point attempt. Dowdle’s agent has announced the fine will be appealed. This incident highlights the NFL’s ongoing scrutiny of player celebrations and potential for penalties.
Actor and comedian Keegan-Michael Key, creator of the original sketch, expressed his support for Dowdle on Instagram, stating, “Rico. Man, you got robbed. You only did two pumps.” Dowdle also missed Wednesday’s practice with a quad injury, though coach Dave Canales downplayed the severity, stating the team expects the league’s third-leading rusher to play Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. The team has not commented further on the fine beyond Canales’ remarks regarding Dowdle’s injury status.
