Duolingo is rolling out a helpful new feature to its free version that will offer users more detailed explanations about their answers, starting January 1, 2026.
The Explain My Answer tool, previously available only to paying subscribers, will now be accessible to all users on iOS, with development underway for Android. The feature provides personalized feedback based on the specific mistakes made in an answer, helping learners understand exactly which grammar rule they struggled with.
According to Duolingo, this targeted approach makes it easier to learn by highlighting exactly what went wrong, rather than offering generic corrections. The tool also works even when an answer is correct, offering additional context to reinforce learning.
Although Duolingo has traditionally focused less on detailed explanations, the company says this update brings more depth to language learning. The feature, which has existed since 2023 for paid accounts, helps users improve faster by focusing on the rules they personally identify challenging.
Located at the bottom of the screen during lessons, Explain My Answer is designed to support learners as they build vocabulary and grammar skills through short, science-backed lessons.
The update aligns with Duolingo’s broader mission to make language education more effective and engaging, using game-like elements and expert-designed methods to promote long-term retention.
