Global Air Travel Disruptions Rise in September, Cancellations Up 11%

Global air travel experienced increased disruption in September, with flight cancellations rising by 11 percent compared to August, according to the latest report from aviation data firm Cirium.

The surge in cancellations, impacting travelers worldwide, was largely attributed to “operational setbacks in key international markets,” particularly Europe where cancellations jumped 50 percent from 4,680 flights in August to 7,018 in September. Disruptions included strikes affecting KLM services, a cyber attack on check-in and boarding systems, and the unexpected collapse of Icelandic budget carrier PLAY late last month. However, the picture wasn’t uniform; North America saw a significant 56 percent decrease in cancellations, falling from 12,223 to 5,364 flights.

Despite the overall increase in cancellations, several airlines maintained strong on-time performance. Icelandair led European carriers with 86.4 percent of flights arriving on time, closely followed by SAS (84.1 percent), Iberia (83.4 percent), and Finnair (81.9 percent). Globally, Aeromexico topped the charts with a 91.80 percent on-time arrival rate, continuing its strong performance as the world’s most punctual airline throughout 2024, according to Cirium’s annual rankings. A flight is considered on-time if it arrives within 15 minutes of its scheduled arrival.

These disruptions highlight the ongoing challenges facing the aviation industry as it navigates increased demand and unforeseen operational issues; travelers should be aware of their passenger rights when facing delays or cancellations. Officials are monitoring the situation and working with airlines to mitigate further disruptions in the coming months.
