Mexico Convenience Store Fire Kills at Least 23, Including Children
At least 23 people, including several minors, were killed and 12 others injured in a fire and explosion at a convenience store in Hermosillo, Mexico, yesterday.
The blaze occurred in downtown Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora state, around 2:00 p.m. local time. Governor Alfonso Durazo shared a video on social media stating, “Sadly, a number of the victims we’ve found were minors,” and confirmed the injured were transported to local hospitals. He added, “I have ordered an extensive and transparent investigation to determine the causes of the incident and figure out those responsible.” The tragedy casts a shadow over Day of the Dead celebrations, a significant cultural event in Mexico.
Preliminary investigations suggest the deaths were caused by “inhalation of toxic gases,” according to Sonora Attorney General Gustavo Salas Chávez. Authorities have not ruled out any potential causes, though at this time there is no indication the fire was intentional. Witnesses reported seeing a man who had been burned collapsing near the store entrance, and images circulating online show significant damage to the Waldo’s store facade. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims and has instructed Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodriguez to send a support team to assist those affected. Reports indicate customers sought shelter inside the store after the initial explosion, becoming trapped as the fire spread. Local authorities have urged the public to avoid the area and canceled scheduled Day of the Dead events. Reuters has additional coverage of the incident.
Officials say an extensive investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire and hold those responsible accountable.
