The Formula 1 championship battle heads to a dramatic conclusion at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with Lando Norris holding a narrow 12-point lead over reigning champion Max Verstappen following a complex weekend at the Qatar Grand Prix. Several key drivers, including Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, faced difficulties on the Losail International Circuit, impacting their championship hopes.
McLaren’s strategic decisions during a safety car period also played a role in shifting the competitive landscape.
Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton both endured a challenging weekend at the Qatar Grand Prix, as the battle for the Formula 1 championship heats up with just one race remaining.
Leclerc finished eighth in the race, while Hamilton trailed behind in twelfth. Struggling to find confidence and pace in his car, the Monegasque driver shifted his focus to observing the race ahead and calculating points in the title fight.
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri lost the lead to four-time World Champion Max Verstappen after the team opted not to pit either the Australian or Lando Norris during an early Safety Car period. The Woking-based squad had a chance to disrupt Verstappen’s championship ambitions in Qatar, but that opportunity now moves to the season finale at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Heading into the final round of the season, Norris leads the driver standings by 12 points over Verstappen in second, while Piastri is four points behind the Dutchman in third.
When asked who he favored to win the championship, Leclerc stated, “It’s difficult. It’s really difficult. I think anything can happen when the gap is very small. I don’t know. It’s probably between Lando and Max, but anything can happen, especially with the tension that will be there.”
“Accidents can play a big role, and they are all fighting for the front positions,” he continued. “It was a very boring week for me, but I could follow a little bit on the screen and started to calculate the points in my head, which was at least the most exciting part of my race. Apart from that, it was a very boring race, and I hope we have an exciting final race in Abu Dhabi.”
“It’s great. I wish it was a four-way fight and I was part of it. I want to be in the competition. I want to fight at the front, and it’s nice to see those fights, but it would be great to be part of it.”
