Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson Star in “Song Sung Blue,” Based on True Story of Neil Diamond Tribute Band
Focus Features will release “Song Sung Blue” on December 25, 2025, a film based on the remarkable true story of Lightning and Thunder, a Neil Diamond tribute band from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The film, directed by Craig Brewer and premiering at AFI Fest, stars Hugh Jackman as Mike Sardina, a Vietnam veteran and mechanic, and Kate Hudson as Claire Stengl, a single mother and hairdresser. The pair form the tribute band after Claire suggests they combine their vocal talents; Sardina and Stengl performed as vocal impressionists in local bars before joining forces. Joining them are Michael Imperioli as Mark Shurilla, a Buddy Holly impersonator, and Jim Belushi as their manager, Tom D’Amato. The band’s unlikely success culminated in opening for Pearl Jam in Wisconsin, where Jackman’s character even duetted with Eddie Vedder on “Forever In Blue Jeans.”
“Song Sung Blue” is based on Greg Koh’s 2008 documentary and explores the band’s rise to local fame and the personal challenges faced by its members. The film reportedly doesn’t shy away from the tragedies that befell the real-life individuals, offering a nuanced portrayal of resilience and the pursuit of happiness. This story highlights the growing popularity of tribute bands and their significant cultural impact, as explored in a recent article by Billboard.
Critics have praised Jackman and Hudson’s performances, with some noting Hudson’s role as her strongest since her Oscar-nominated performance in “Almost Famous.” The film’s delicate balance of musical comedy and drama has also been lauded. Focus Features anticipates a strong awards season push for the film, potentially boosting tourism to Milwaukee, as seen with other films featuring specific locations like Filmed in Wisconsin.
Focus Features has not yet commented on potential follow-up projects or further promotional plans, but anticipates a wide theatrical release for the Christmas Day premiere.
