International Summit to Finalize Gaza War-End Agreement to be Held in Sharm el-Sheikh
An international summit is scheduled to take place today in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, aimed at finalizing an agreement to end the ongoing war in Gaza and establish a framework for future regional stability.
More than 20 world leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, are expected to attend the summit, according to an Egyptian presidential spokesperson. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will also be present, despite Israel’s stated opposition to any postwar role for the PA in Gaza. The summit intends to solidify support for the second phase of Trump’s peace plan, which focuses on disarming Hamas and creating a new governing body in the Gaza Strip.
A Trump administration official stated that the event will focus on securing agreement from the four guarantors of the plan – the US, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey – on “the very broad principles” of a 20-point framework. While Israel and Hamas were not invited, solidifying a unified stance from these key nations could significantly influence the trajectory of the conflict and potentially limit Israel’s options for resuming military operations. This comes after a period of intensive negotiations that led to a ceasefire and the release of hostages.
Several leaders have confirmed their attendance, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Hossam Badran, a Hamas political bureau member, confirmed the group “will not be involved,” adding that any disarmament of Hamas is “out of the question.” President Trump is scheduled to address the Knesset in Israel this morning before traveling to Sharm el-Sheikh this afternoon.
