This unique geological feature is attracting attention from scientists and captivating residents alike.

The most prominent example of this phenomenon is the St. Georgs church, constructed from a rock called suevite that contains approximately 5,000 carats of diamonds. “Our church, St. Georgs, is made of suevite (and contains) about 5,000 carats of diamonds,” explained Gisela Pösges, a geologist and deputy director of the Ries Crater Museum in Nördlingen, in a 2016 interview with Smithsonian Magazine. “But the diamonds are so small – the largest is 0.3 mm in size – that they have no economic value, only scientific value. You can only observe the diamonds with a microscope.”

The presence of these diamonds isn’t due to a natural geological process, but rather a dramatic cosmic event. Approximately 15 million years ago, an asteroid struck the Earth in what is now Nördlingen. Traveling at a speed of 25 kilometers per second, the 1-kilometer-wide asteroid created a 26-kilometer-wide crater, which eventually became the site of the modern town. This impact generated immense heat and pressure, transforming carbon within the Earth’s crust into tiny diamonds, less than 0.2 mm in diameter.

The town’s origins trace back to the 9th century BCE, and early settlers unknowingly built their structures using stone rich in these microscopic gems. Buildings were almost entirely constructed from this diamond-infused suevite, making Nördlingen a truly unique location on Earth. Understanding the geological history of a region can sometimes reveal surprising elements that impact its landscape and even its building materials.

For years, residents simply lived within a crater, unaware of its origins. It wasn’t until the 1960s that American geologists Eugene Shoemaker and Edward Chao began to investigate. They determined that the crater’s formation didn’t align with typical volcanic crater characteristics, realizing the land was formed from above, not below. Examining the walls of Nördlingen’s churches, they discovered clusters of diamonds, confirming their suspicions.

“Schoolbooks taught that formations like this were caused by volcanoes,” said Nördlingen resident Roswitha Feil, as reported by the BBC in 2017. “Then it was discovered that it came from an asteroid, and they had to change all the schoolbooks.”

Following Shoemaker and Chao’s initial findings, local geologists estimated that the town’s walls and buildings contain around 72,000 tons of diamonds. While suevite containing similar materials can be found elsewhere, no other location boasts such a high concentration of these tiny gemstones.

“There are various places in the world that use material from asteroid impacts as building material, but not in this quantity,” explained Dr. Stefan Hölzl, a geologist at the RiesKrater Museum. “Here, the material was used to build the entire city.”

The impact’s legacy extends beyond the town’s architecture. Surrounding forests thrive due to soil enriched with asteroid material, and remnants of suevite quarries are still visible in the area.
