Popular ‘Health’ Foods May Be Shortening Lifespans, Experts Warn
Several commonly consumed foods marketed as healthy – including instant oatmeal, fruit juice, and protein powders – may actually be detrimental to long-term health and longevity, according to nutritionists and health experts.
While diets like the Mediterranean diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, are consistently linked to positive health outcomes, experts caution against relying on ultra-processed alternatives. Registered dietitian Maria Kupreeva notes that plant-based meat substitutes, while appealing to those avoiding animal products, are often “high in sodium and have a lot of filler ingredients,” potentially increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Similarly, convenient options like instant oatmeal frequently contain significant added sugar, even with artificial sweeteners, which the World Health Organization advises limiting.
Other seemingly healthy choices also come with caveats. Fruit juice lacks the fiber found in whole fruit, leading to quicker sugar absorption, and acai bowls can vary drastically in nutritional value depending on their ingredients.
