Cesar Chavez’s Grandson Releases Children’s Book, Continues Legacy of Farmworker Advocacy
Eduardo Chavez, grandson of labor leader Cesar Chavez, released his first children’s book, “Mi Abuelo César” (“My Grandfather César”), today, aiming to educate a younger generation about the fight for farmworkers’ rights.
Inspired by a 2023 visit to Alturas Elementary in Hailey, Idaho, Chavez said the book reflects his own childhood experiences learning about his grandfather’s work. “I wrote this story to hopefully educate and inspire young people…to maybe be able to learn these themes for the first time and go on their own journeys,” Chavez stated. The book is geared towards children ages 5 to 9. Chavez’s grandfather, Cesar Chavez, co-founded the United Farm Workers alongside Dolores Huerta, becoming a pivotal figure in the labor and civil rights movement.
Chavez has been sharing his grandfather’s story through his documentary, “Hailing Cesar,” since 2018, with screenings at colleges and high schools. He noted a particularly impactful experience in central Washington state, where he connected with individuals who had worked directly with Cesar Chavez. “They’ll always tell me there’s an incredible history here,” Chavez said, recalling the positive influence his grandfather had on farmworker communities in the region, including a 1968 march from Yakima to Granger. Understanding this history is crucial as farmworkers continue to face challenges related to fair wages and working conditions.
Community leaders in Hailey, Idaho, have embraced Chavez’s efforts. Herbert Romero, a community organizer, facilitated Chavez’s visits to the area, beginning in 2021, and witnessed the enthusiastic engagement of students during a school assembly. Brad Hansen, principal of Alturas Elementary, emphasized the importance of bringing historical figures to life for students, stating, “Eduardo, his grandfather and Dolores Huerta share the message that we all matter, and to be proud of who you are and to leave a lasting mark on your communities.” Chavez plans to continue his book tour in California and hopes to visit more schools throughout the Inland Northwest soon.
