US State Department Warns of Imminent Hamas Attack on Civilians in Gaza
The US State Department issued a statement today, October 19, 2025, alleging it has received credible reports indicating Hamas is planning an imminent attack against civilians in Gaza, a move that would violate the current ceasefire agreement.
According to the statement, such an attack would be a “direct and grave” violation of the ceasefire and “undermine the significant progress achieved through mediation efforts.” The State Department did not provide specifics regarding the nature of the planned attack or the source of its intelligence. This development comes as the first phase of the Hamas-Israel ceasefire continues, with all living hostages having been released and the remains of deceased hostages still being repatriated to Israel. As part of the agreement, Israel has freed 250 Palestinian prisoners and 1,718 detainees from Gaza.
Washington has reportedly informed Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey – the other guarantors of the Gaza peace agreement – and demanded Hamas uphold the ceasefire terms. The State Department indicated that “measures will be taken to protect the people of Gaza and preserve the integrity of the ceasefire” should the attack proceed. Earlier this week, former President Donald Trump warned against civilian casualties, stating on his Truth Social platform, “If Hamas continues to kill people in Gaza, which was not the Deal, we will have no choice but to go in and kill them,” though he later clarified he would not deploy US troops. Concerns about civilian safety have been heightened following reports of violence, including Human Rights Watch’s documentation of alleged war crimes committed during the conflict.
Yesterday, Israel confirmed receipt of two additional bodies from Gaza believed to be those of hostages, pending formal identification, bringing the total number of returned remains to ten out of twenty-eight. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated the Rafah border crossing will remain closed until all remaining bodies are returned. Separately, a Hamas-run civil defense ministry reported eleven members of a single Palestinian family were killed by an Israeli tank shell, while the Israeli military claimed it targeted a “suspicious vehicle” near the demarcation line in Gaza. The ongoing conflict, sparked by the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack that killed approximately 1,200 people in southern Israel and led to the capture of 251 hostages, has resulted in at least 68,000 Palestinian deaths in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. A UN commission of inquiry previously alleged Israel committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, a claim Israel has vehemently denied.
Officials stated they are monitoring the situation closely and awaiting a response from Hamas.
