Remains of Hostage Eliyahu Margalit Returned to Israel from Gaza
The remains of 75-year-old Eliyahu Margalit, an Israeli hostage killed on October 7th, were returned to Israel today by the Red Cross, bringing the total number of deceased hostages repatriated from Gaza to ten.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that Margalit, known to friends and family as Churchill, was taken from the Nir Oz kibbutz during the Hamas-led attack. His death was previously announced in December 2023, following the release of his daughter, Nili, during a temporary truce. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum described Margalit as “a cowboy at heart” who managed cattle and horse stables in Nir Oz for many years. The return of remains is a critical step for families seeking closure, but highlights the ongoing challenges in securing the release of all hostages.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) stated its team ensured the remains were handled with respect, and Israeli forensic authorities will conduct identification in Tel Aviv. While a US-brokered ceasefire deal included the return of hostages, disputes have arisen over the full fulfillment of the agreement, with Hamas claiming difficulties in locating all bodies due to Israeli strikes. For more information on the ongoing conflict, see the United Nations Information System on the Question of Palestine.
Despite these challenges, Hamas maintains its commitment to the ceasefire and the return of remaining corpses. US officials have indicated they do not currently believe Hamas is in breach of the agreement, noting the group has shared information with mediators. Recent reports suggest that former President Trump played a role in mediating the ceasefire, expressing concerns about the scope of Israeli operations, as detailed in a recent interview with CBS News. The IDF stressed that Hamas must “uphold the agreement and take the necessary steps to return all the hostages.”
