Three Italian Police Officers Killed in Verona Explosion During Eviction Attempt

Three Italian police officers were killed and more than a dozen others injured today when an explosion destroyed a farmhouse near Verona, as authorities attempted to serve an eviction order, officials reported.

The blast, which leveled the two-story home in Castel d’Azzano, approximately six miles southwest of Verona, occurred shortly after dawn as a team of Carabinieri and other law enforcement entered the property. Authorities believe the explosion was deliberately triggered by residents who had been illegally occupying the building for over a year. Col. Claudio Pagano, commander of the Verona Carabinieri police force, described the act as “an absolutely senseless act.” Investigators discovered multiple gas canisters inside the home, suggesting the building had been intentionally filled with gas.

A brother and sister, Dino and Maria Luisa Ramponi, both in their 60s, were arrested at the scene, with a third sibling later taken into custody. According to prosecutors, the Ramponi siblings had previously resisted eviction attempts, even allegedly threatening to detonate the property last year. Verona prosecutor Raffaele Tito stated, “The act appears to have been planned in advance. When officers opened the door, the house exploded.” This incident highlights the growing challenges faced by authorities when dealing with property occupations and potential escalation of conflict. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called the deaths “a tragedy that strikes the entire nation” and extended condolences to the families of the victims, while Defense Minister Guido Crosetto labeled it “a barbaric act against those who serve the state with courage.” A criminal investigation has been launched by the Verona prosecutor’s office to determine the full extent of the premeditation and responsibility. Reuters is following the story.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the scene and gather evidence as they work to understand the full circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
