Millions Struggle with Phobias, From Common Fears to the Bizarre
An estimated 33 million American adults experience phobias, ranging from well-known anxieties like fear of heights to more unusual ones like a fear of knees, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.
ICU nurse and EMT Kathy Machuga exemplifies the debilitating nature of phobias, describing her dental phobia as “anxiety on steroids.” She recounted fleeing a dental appointment, feeling unable to breathe or swallow. Psychologist Luana Marques, a phobia specialist at Harvard, explains that a phobia is “an intense fear of something that poses little or no threat.” Marques herself battles a fear of cockroaches, stating, “I scream, my heart starts to pound…and I run for dear life.”
Marques treats patients using exposure therapy, repeatedly confronting them with their fears until the brain recalibrates. She recently worked with a patient afraid of flying, taking 20 flights in five days. Other less common phobias include a fear of beards (pogonophobia) and, surprisingly, a lifelong fear of dolphins experienced by supermodel Tyra Banks. Understanding and addressing phobias is crucial, as they can significantly impact daily life and well-being. For those struggling with extreme weather anxieties, a recent study explored the phenomenon of weather phobia, finding that approximately 2% of the population experiences an extreme fear.
Treatment options range from reassurance and support, as offered by dentists like Louis Siegelman who pre-calls anxious patients, to sedation. Machuga, who travels 270 miles to see Siegelman, was able to undergo a dental procedure peacefully under sedation. Marques emphasizes the importance of continued exposure, noting she has overcome her fear of heights but still avoids cockroaches.
Experts say recognizing that a fear is higher than normal is the first step, and that individuals are not alone in their struggles. Officials encourage those experiencing debilitating phobias to seek professional help and explore available treatment options.
