A fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is facing a serious challenge following a series of Israeli airstrikes in Gaza on Saturday, November 22, 2025, that have left at least 21 Palestinians dead and dozens injured. The strikes, which occurred after an incident where Israel claims an armed individual crossed into gaza and opened fire, threaten to unravel the U.S.-brokered truce established just over a month ago on October 10th [[1]]. The escalating violence raises concerns about a renewed cycle of conflict in the region after two years of intermittent hostilities [[2]].

Israeli airstrikes on Gaza have killed 21 people and injured dozens more, according to Gaza’s Civil Defense agency. The renewed violence threatens a fragile ceasefire brokered by the United States, raising concerns about a potential escalation of the conflict after two years of war.

Several Israeli airstrikes took place on Saturday, November 22, 2025, local time, with both Hamas and Israel accusing each other of violating the truce. The ceasefire, which began on October 10, aimed to de-escalate tensions following a prolonged period of hostilities.

The Israeli military stated that an “armed terrorist” crossed what it calls the Yellow Line into the Gaza Strip – an area from which Israeli forces have withdrawn – and opened fire on Israeli soldiers. This incident prompted the retaliatory strikes.

In response to the incident in southern Gaza, an area used as a route for humanitarian aid deliveries, the Israeli military said it “began to attack terror targets in the Gaza Strip.”

Mahmud Bassal, a spokesperson for the Civil Defense agency operating under Hamas authority, told AFP that “21 martyrs were killed tonight in five separate Israeli airstrikes, which clearly violate the ceasefire in Gaza.”

Among the casualties, seven people were killed and more than 16 injured in an attack on a home in Nuseirat in the central Gaza Strip, and four people were killed and several others wounded in an airstrike on a residential apartment in the Al-Nasr district, west of Gaza City, he added.
