Coastal flooding, known locally as “rob,” impacted Jakarta, Indonesia on Saturday, disrupting daily life and prompting a response from local authorities. The inundation, affecting 23 neighborhoods and two major roadways, is attributed to a combination of high tides and a full “supermoon,” a recurring problem for the low-lying coastal areas of the city[[1]]. Jakarta’s Disaster Management Agency is currently working to pump out floodwaters and assist affected residents as water levels range from inches to over two feet in some areas.

Jakarta

Coastal flooding impacted parts of Jakarta, Indonesia on Saturday, affecting 23 neighborhoods and two major roadways, according to local authorities. The inundation, known as “rob” in Indonesia, is a recurring issue in the northern part of the city.

The Jakarta Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) reported the flooding as of 2:00 PM local time (2:00 AM EST) and attributed it to a combination of high tides, a full moon, and the perigee – when the moon is closest to Earth, creating a “supermoon” effect.

“The phenomenon of maximum sea level combined with the full moon and perigee (Supermoon) has the potential to increase the maximum sea level, resulting in coastal flooding or ‘rob’ in the northern coastal areas of Jakarta,” the BPBD stated.
