New York Jets Legend Nick Mangold Dies at 41 After Battle with Kidney Disease

Former New York Jets center Nick Mangold, a cornerstone of the team’s offensive line for over a decade, passed away Saturday night at the age of 41 following complications from kidney disease, leaving a significant void in the hearts of fans and the NFL community.

Mangold, drafted by the Jets in 2006 out of Ohio State, recently revealed his long-term battle with a genetic kidney defect and his need for dialysis. “Nick was more than a legendary center,” said Jets Chairman Woody Johnson. “He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football.” He was a seven-time Pro Bowler and a first-team All-Pro selection in 2009 and 2010, consistently anchoring a line that helped lead the Jets to multiple playoff appearances.

Throughout his career, Mangold started 171 games for the Jets, becoming known for his durability and skill. Former teammate D’Brickashaw Ferguson reflected on their bond, stating, “A big part of our lives were spent on that field… I do appreciate having had the opportunity to do life with him, and not only him but his family.” Mangold’s impact extended beyond the field; he was inducted into the Jets’ Ring of Honor in 2022 and was recently on the list of 52 Modern-Era players under consideration for the [Pro Football Hall of Fame](https://www.profootballhof.com/). His passing comes as a blow to those hoping to see him enshrined in Canton.

The Jets organization and the NFL have expressed their deepest condolences to Mangold’s wife, Jenny, and their four children. “On behalf of the entire Johnson family and the New York Jets organization,” Woody Johnson stated, “we offer our sincere condolences… Nick Mangold will forever be a Jet.” Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced, and the team is expected to honor his memory during their next home game.
