History Made: Kathleen Krüger Becomes Bundesliga’s First Female Sporting Director at HSV
Hamburger SV has shattered a glass ceiling in German football, officially appointing Kathleen Krüger as its new sporting director. The move marks a historic milestone for the Bundesliga, as Krüger becomes the first woman to hold a top-level sporting leadership position within the league’s elite.
The 40-year-old manager arrives at the Hanseatic club following a distinguished 17-year tenure at FC Bayern Munich. During her time with the Bavarian giants, Krüger built an enviable resume, serving as team manager and most recently as the Head of Organization and Infrastructure. Her departure is considered a significant loss for Bayern, where she was highly regarded internally and reportedly on the verge of being promoted to director of professional soccer.
Krüger steps into the role to fill the vacancy left by Stefan Kuntz, who resigned at the beginning of the year. Demonstrating absolute confidence in her vision, HSV has secured her services with a long-term contract that ties her to the club until 2030.

In her new capacity, Krüger will oversee the club’s entire sporting department. While Claus Costa will remain primarily responsible for transfers and squad planning, Krüger will serve as his superior and focus on overarching strategic sporting issues. She will work alongside Eric Huwer to manage the club’s operational business.
The transition had been the subject of speculation for some time. Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund previously acknowledged the move on May 9, 2026, stating, “Yes, we can confirm that Kathleen has informed us that she is in talks with HSV.”
This appointment brings a wealth of elite-level experience to the “red shorts,” as Krüger’s deep familiarity with the inner workings of a global powerhouse like FC Bayern provides HSV with a strategic advantage. The move not only signals a new era for the club’s management but also represents a pivotal shift in the leadership landscape of German professional football.
