Latvia: Cyclone to Bring Snow and Sub-Zero Temperatures Next Week

Latvia is bracing for a significant winter storm as a strengthening cyclone is forecast to bring widespread snowfall and frigid temperatures to much of the country starting early next week. The Latvian Environment,Geology and Meteorology Center warns of potential travel disruptions and hazardous conditions,with temperatures expected to plummet as low as -20 degrees Celsius in eastern regions. Residents are advised to prepare for challenging weather as the cyclone moves through the area, perhaps impacting daily life and infrastructure.

Temperatures are expected to dip as low as -20 degrees Celsius in eastern regions in the coming days, while coastal areas will be several degrees warmer, the agency reported.

Monday will be mostly cloudy. Snow is expected across much of Latvia overnight, particularly in central regions, and throughout the day in many areas, with accumulations of two to four centimeters. Winds will be light to moderate from the east and southeast. Overnight lows will range from -10 to -15 degrees Celsius in western and central regions, and -15 to -20 degrees Celsius in the east. Daytime highs will be -8 to -13 degrees Celsius, and -5 to -8 degrees Celsius along the Kurzeme coast.

On Tuesday, snowfall is forecast for most of the country, with snow accumulations of one to four centimeters, and in some areas of southern Latvia, five to eight centimeters. There is also a chance of sleet in southern regions. Winds will be light to moderate from the east and northeast, becoming gusty along the Kurzeme coast. Overnight lows will be -8 to -13 degrees Celsius, dropping to -14 to -18 degrees Celsius in Vidzeme, while the Kurzeme coast will be slightly warmer, at -5 to -8 degrees Celsius. Daytime highs will be -7 to -11 degrees Celsius, remaining a few degrees warmer along the Kurzeme coast.

Wednesday will continue to see cloudy skies and widespread snow. Winds will be light to moderate from the north and northeast, remaining gusty along the Kurzeme coast. Overnight and daytime temperatures will be between -5 and -10 degrees Celsius, but colder in Vidzeme, where temperatures will drop to -9 to -12 degrees Celsius.

Snowfall is expected to diminish in the latter half of the week, while light to moderate east-southeasterly winds will persist. While weather forecasts are subject to change, temperatures are expected to remain below freezing, with overnight lows reaching -20 degrees Celsius in eastern regions.
