Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia has apologized for past “toxic” behavior, CNN reports, following a falling out with former President Donald Trump over the release of Jeffrey Epstein-related documents. The shift comes as Greene feels the direct impact of Trump’s attacks.

“The most hurtful thing he said, and that was completely untrue, was that I was a traitor. That was an incredible mischaracterization, and those are the kinds of words that can radicalize people against me and put my life in danger.”

Greene told CNN.

CNN’s Dana Bash pointed out that Greene had previously remained silent when Trump leveled similar accusations against others, only speaking out now that she personally feels the consequences. The congresswoman, who previously embraced far-right conspiracy theories – including the idea of a Jewish space laser causing California wildfires – and gained prominence by amplifying them, now acknowledges her own participation in Trump’s attacks on others.

“I think that’s a fair criticism, and I want to deeply apologize for being a part of that toxic political environment. It’s very bad for our country. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about that lately.”

she added.

The dispute over the Epstein files wasn’t the only point of contention between the former president and his onetime ally. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democratic representative, stated on an Instagram live stream earlier this month that Greene had approached Trump about a potential Senate run in Georgia, a bid the former president reportedly discouraged. Trump recently echoed these claims (referring to the representative as a “raving lunatic”), but Greene denies ever discussing such ambitions with Trump, stating he did not oppose a potential run.
