NASA’s Perseverance rover has detected the sound of lightning on Mars, marking the first time electrical discharges have been recorded on the Red Planet.

While not as high-voltage as lightning on Earth, the rover captured audio evidence of the phenomenon. Baptiste Chide, a scientist involved in the research, described the discharges as “mini lightning” – centimeter-scale electrical events. This discovery offers new insights into the Martian atmosphere and its potential for supporting life.

Chide and his team published their findings in the journal Nature.

According to reports, NASA’s Perseverance rover was able to record these electrical discharges during a two-year observation period, detecting 55 lightning events. The findings, as reported by The New York Times, could reshape our understanding of the Martian atmosphere and the possibility of life on the planet.

The team, led by planetary scientist Chide from the University of Toulouse in France, analyzed audio data and electromagnetic interference recordings from the Perseverance rover. A scan of 28 hours of data revealed the 55 electrical discharge events. This research highlights the increasing sophistication of instruments used in planetary exploration.

Knowing that electrical discharges occur on Mars will inform the design of future exploration technologies, ensuring they are protected from these events. As TRT Haber reports, this is the first time such phenomena have been documented on the planet.

Furthermore, lightning is hypothesized to have played a crucial role in the emergence of life on Earth. If lightning also occurs on Mars, astrobiologists will be able to factor this into their calculations regarding the potential for life.
