After years of negotiation and multiple delays, a comprehensive trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur bloc – comprised of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay – appears poised for finalization. The prospective deal, representing a combined market of over 700 million consumers, has faced scrutiny regarding environmental safeguards and potential impacts on European farmers [[2]]. Recent commitments from both Germany and Italy to secure domestic approval have cleared a path toward a scheduled signing on January 12th, potentially unlocking significant tariff reductions and bolstering trade flows between the two regions [[1]].

A landmark trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur nations of South America is now slated for signing on January 12th, according to German Chancellor Merz. The announcement follows assurances from Italian Prime Minister Meloni that she will secure approval for the deal within her government in January.

Merz stated in a televised appearance that Meloni had consulted with her cabinet prior to making the commitment. He also noted that discussions regarding the agreement had taken place with the newly elected presidents of Brazil, Lula, and Argentina, Milei.

The development comes after the European Council once again postponed a final decision on the Mercosur agreement, drawing criticism from industry leaders. The President of the German Association of the Automotive Industry, Müller, said the EU was projecting an image of weakness with the continued delays.

The prospective agreement between the EU and the Mercosur states – Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay – would encompass a combined population of over 700 million people, making it one of the largest trade agreements of its kind globally. The deal’s finalization could significantly reshape trade dynamics between the two regions.
