North Korea Warns of “More Offensive Action” After US-South Korea Military Strengthening

North Korea’s defense minister has vowed further military action in response to strengthened ties between the United States and South Korea, including the arrival of a US aircraft carrier and ongoing joint military drills.

Defense Minister No Kwang Chol condemned the arrival of the USS George Washington and the Fifth Carrier Strike Group at a port in Busan, South Korea, stating, “We will show more offensive action against the enemies’ threat on the principle of ensuring security and defending peace by dint of powerful strength.” The warning follows yesterday’s launch of what appeared to be a short-range ballistic missile into the sea off North Korea’s east coast. All threats to North Korean security will become “direct targets,” according to the minister’s statement reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) and South Korea’s Yonhap news agency.

The escalating tensions come after Washington announced new sanctions targeting eight North Korean nationals and two entities accused of laundering money linked to cybercrimes, and a visit to South Korea by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Hegseth recently visited the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) with his South Korean counterpart, a move Pyongyang described as an “unveiled intentional expression of their hostile nature.” The US and South Korea have been bolstering their defense cooperation amid concerns over North Korea’s growing nuclear and missile programs; this increased alliance is intended to deter further provocations. The US Indo-Pacific Command stated that while yesterday’s missile launch did not pose an immediate threat to US personnel or territory, it highlighted the destabilizing impact of North Korea’s actions. Secretary Hegseth has indicated that the core of the US alliance with Seoul will remain focused on deterring North Korea, while also allowing for flexibility in addressing regional threats, as detailed in a Department of Defense statement.

US officials said they are consulting closely with allies and partners regarding the ballistic missile launch and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
