Obama to Rally for New Jersey Gubernatorial Candidate Mikie Sherrill
Former President Barack Obama will headline a Get Out the Vote rally in Newark this Saturday, November 1, in support of Democratic Representative Mikie Sherrill’s campaign for New Jersey governor.
Sherrill, a former federal prosecutor and U.S. Navy veteran, is locked in a tight race with Republican Jack Ciattarelli ahead of the November 4 election; recent polls indicate a statistical dead heat. Obama’s endorsement of Sherrill came earlier this month, and his appearance signals the national importance placed on the New Jersey governor’s race, which is being viewed as a key indicator of Democratic strength.
Ciattarelli, a businessman seeking to unseat incumbent Governor Phil Murphy, is attempting to broaden his appeal among Black and Latino voters. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is also scheduled to appear at a rally for Sherrill on Thursday, October 30, in Red Bank, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro spoke at a rally for her yesterday in New Brunswick. While former President Donald Trump has not campaigned in person for Ciattarelli, he did hold a tele-rally for the candidate last week. You can find more information about the candidates and their platforms here.
Early in-person voting is already underway in New Jersey; residents can find locations and hours on the state’s election website. The outcome of this election will determine the direction of New Jersey for the next four years.
Details regarding the location of Saturday’s rally with Obama are forthcoming, and registration is currently open.
