Omada Health to Prescribe and Manage Obesity Medications, Including GLP-1s

Virtual care company Omada Health announced today it will begin prescribing and managing obesity medications, including GLP-1s, expanding its weight management program to over 800,000 members.

The move comes as digital health companies increasingly enter the market for GLP-1s – drugs used to treat obesity, diabetes, and other chronic conditions – a sector projected to reach approximately $100 billion by the end of the decade. Omada plans to utilize licensed providers trained in obesity care to prescribe medications and provide ongoing management support. This expansion aims to address a growing need for comprehensive support as access to these medications increases.

“The announcement is in response to our belief that access to GLP-1s will grow pretty significantly over time,” said Omada co-founder and CEO Sean Duffy in an interview. He emphasized the importance of supporting patients through potential medication adjustments and side effects, stating, “If you need to go up in dose, down in those, switch medications – you name it. We’ll be able to support you through this experience.” Omada’s program will offer nutrition guidance, education, and a team of health coaches and exercise specialists, building on its existing chronic condition management programs. The increasing prevalence of obesity and related health issues is driving demand for effective treatment options, and GLP-1s have shown significant promise in clinical trials, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Omada, which partners with health plans and employers, positions this offering as a way to improve worker health and control costs. The company also reported quarterly earnings today, its second since its initial public offering in June. Officials stated they will continue to monitor market developments and adapt their offerings to meet evolving patient needs.
