A prominent American forward is attracting interest from Panathinaikos Athens, one of Europe’s most storied basketball clubs, as the team aims to reinforce its roster for a championship push. While the player currently holds a one-year contract with the Phoenix Suns, limited playing time in the NBA has fueled speculation about a potential return to European competition. Though currently leaning towards remaining in the NBA, a move back to the EuroLeague isn’t out of the question, especially given his recent success and accolades with Istanbul Fenerbahçe.
A 31-year-old forward is reportedly drawing interest from Panathinaikos Athens (PAO), a major Greek basketball club. This potential move comes as teams often seek to bolster their rosters with experienced players during key seasons.
However, acquiring the American player may prove challenging, as he is currently not inclined to leave the NBA. The NBA represents a significant career stage for many athletes, and leaving it requires careful consideration.
Currently, the likelihood of the player returning to Europe is estimated to be around 20-30 percent. This suggests a degree of openness to the possibility, but also a strong preference to remain in the NBA.
The forward previously played for Kauno Žalgiris from 2019 to 2021 before returning to the NBA last summer after a seven-year absence, signing a one-year contract with the Phoenix Suns.
Despite the return to the NBA, the 31-year-old has seen limited playing time with the Suns, averaging approximately 8 minutes per game across 21 appearances, during which he scores 1.5 points, grabs 1.3 rebounds, and records 0.3 assists. Limited playing time can be a factor in a player’s decision-making process regarding their career path.
Last season, the American player achieved considerable success with Istanbul Fenerbahçe, winning the EuroLeague championship, the Turkish Championship, and the Turkish Cup. He was a key player for the team coached by Šarūnas Jasikevičius, averaging 16.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and a 18.3 efficiency rating in the EuroLeague.
He was also named the Most Valuable Player of the EuroLeague Final Four. This recognition highlights his significant contribution to the team’s success.
Following a loss in a EuroLeague derby in Piraeus, Dimitris Giannakopoulos, the owner of the Greek team, addressed fans and made a bold promise on social media.
“I am preparing a bomb in the market. It will be a big deal. If necessary to win the EuroLeague, I will bring you a 29-year-old Michael Jordan,” the Greek owner stated. This statement indicates a strong commitment to strengthening the team and competing for the championship.
