Jessica Pegula Reaches Wuhan Semifinal After Seventh Consecutive Three-Set Match

Jessica Pegula advanced to the semifinal of the Dongfeng · Voyah Wuhan Open today, October 10, 2025, defeating qualifier Katerina Siniakova 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 after yet another grueling three-set battle, continuing a remarkable streak that has defined her recent run in China.

The match, held in Wuhan, saw Pegula initially struggle, dropping the first set 6-2 in just over 30 minutes. However, she rebounded emphatically, winning the second set 6-0 in just 23 minutes to force a deciding set. She ultimately secured the victory in 1 hour and 36 minutes. This win marks her first Wuhan semifinal appearance and extends her impressive record against qualifiers to 18 consecutive victories; her last loss to a qualifier came against Taylor Townsend in Rome in 2023.

Pegula admitted she’s baffled by her ability to consistently win these tight matches, stating, “I don’t know. I guess I’m in really good shape. I definitely don’t think I need to play anymore matches or work on any physical stuff because I’ve been able to battle through these matches and play really well. But yeah, I don’t know.” She added, with a touch of humor, “I’m happy I’ve been able to figure things out… if I win every match for the rest of my life in three sets, I think I’d be pretty happy.” This run of close matches highlights the increasing competitiveness within the WTA tour.

Pegula will next face Aryna Sabalenka, the world No. 1, in the semifinal. Despite a challenging 2-8 career record against Sabalenka, including four consecutive losses, Pegula will draw confidence from a pattern observed in previous tournaments where victories over Siniakova have preceded title wins, such as earlier this year in Bad Homburg. Officials confirmed Sabalenka defeated her in three sets in New York earlier this year, setting the stage for a highly anticipated rematch.
