Powerful Tornado Kills Six in Southern Brazil

A devastating tornado ripped through Brazil’s Paraná state yesterday, killing six people and injuring hundreds more, officials confirmed today.

The tornado, which struck with winds exceeding 250 kph (155 mph), caused widespread destruction, leveling dozens of homes and prompting a state of emergency declaration. Five of the fatalities were adults, and one was a 14-year-old girl. More than 750 people received medical attention, with at least 10 requiring surgery and nine remaining in serious condition, according to state officials. The affected municipalities include Rio Bonito do Iguaçu and Guarapuava.

The severe weather event downed trees, overturned vehicles, and stripped roofs from buildings across the region. This disaster highlights Brazil’s increasing vulnerability to extreme weather events, a trend linked to climate change. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his solidarity with the victims, and members of his Cabinet have announced the immediate dispatch of emergency aid. Assistance will include food, hygiene products, tarps, and mattresses.

Governor Carlos Massa Ratinho Jr. has declared three days of mourning in Paraná to honor those who lost their lives. Search efforts are ongoing for one person still reported missing. Officials stated that emergency assistance is being distributed to those affected and recovery efforts are underway.
