Israeli President Condemns Surge in West Bank Settler Violence
Jerusalem – Israeli President Isaac Herzog today condemned what he called a “shocking and serious” attack by Jewish settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank, marking a rare and forceful rebuke from a top Israeli official amid a growing wave of violence in the occupied territory.
The condemnation follows an incident yesterday in which dozens of masked settlers attacked the Palestinian villages of Beit Lid and Deir Sharaf, setting vehicles and property ablaze and clashing with Israeli soldiers. Four Palestinians were wounded, and four Israelis were initially arrested, though three were subsequently released pending further investigation. The army’s chief of staff, Eyal Zamir, stated the military “will not tolerate” such acts, which he described as a distraction from counterterrorism efforts and contrary to Israeli values. This escalation in violence threatens to further destabilize the region as peace talks remain stalled.
Herzog emphasized that the violence “crosses a red line” and called for decisive action from all state authorities to eradicate the phenomenon. He added in a social media post that the actions of a “handful” of perpetrators are unacceptable. Muayyad Shaaban, who heads an office tracking violence in the Palestinian Authority, reported that settlers targeted dairy trucks, farmland, and Bedouin communities, alleging a deliberate campaign to displace Palestinians. Residents of Beit Lid expressed fear and frustration, with Mahmoud Edeis stating, “To feel that my children are safe… But at any moment something could happen… This can’t go on.” Authorities indicated that investigations are ongoing, and officials vowed to bring offenders to justice “regardless of their background.” The U.N. humanitarian office reported over 260 settler attacks in October alone – the highest number since records began in 2006 – highlighting the severity of the situation and the need for increased security measures, as detailed in a recent Human Rights Watch report.
Israeli officials stated they are committed to addressing the violence and preventing further escalation, but the long-term impact on the region remains uncertain.
