Mexico’s President Sheinbaum Files Charges After Public Assault

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced today she is pressing charges against a man who allegedly groped and attempted to kiss her while she was greeting citizens in Mexico City yesterday.

The incident, captured in a viral video, occurred as Sheinbaum was walking between Mexico’s National Palace and the Education Ministry. The man approached the president from behind, making unwanted physical contact before being intervened by a government official. Sheinbaum, visibly startled, pushed the man’s hands away while maintaining composure. She later described the man as “totally drunk.”

“This is something I experienced as a woman, but it is something that all women in our country experience,” Sheinbaum stated during her daily news conference. She also noted that posting the video was “completely unethical and immoral.” The arrest was confirmed by Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada, according to The Associated Press. This incident highlights the ongoing concerns about violence against women in Mexico, a country where rates of femicide remain alarmingly high.

In response, Sheinbaum announced plans to launch a campaign focused on educating men about respecting women’s rights and intends to review legislation to ensure such crimes are punishable in all 32 Mexican states. She emphasized her commitment to continuing direct engagement with citizens, stating, “We cannot distance ourselves from the people.” You can learn more about violence against women from the United Nations.

Sheinbaum’s office has indicated she will continue to pursue legal action and advocate for stronger protections for women throughout Mexico.
