Ecuador Prison Riot Leaves Four Inmates Dead, Dozens Injured
Four inmates were killed and more than 30 others injured yesterday, November 9, 2025, during a riot at a prison in Machala, Ecuador, as the country continues to grapple with escalating violence within its penal system.
The riot erupted as authorities began reorganizing inmates in preparation for a transfer to a new maximum-security prison in a different province, according to a statement from Ecuador’s prison oversight agency. One police officer was also injured in the unrest. Authorities regained control of the facility following the incident, but have not yet released the identities of those who died or confirmed whether the violence was related to gang activity.
This latest outbreak of violence follows a similar incident less than two months ago at the same prison, where 14 inmates were killed in a dispute between rival gangs. Ecuador’s prisons have become increasingly dangerous in recent years, with overcrowding and corruption contributing to the proliferation of gangs linked to drug trafficking organizations in Colombia and Mexico – a situation that threatens regional stability. More than 500 inmates have died in prison riots across the country since 2021, and last year saw a series of coordinated riots and the hostage-taking of 150 prison guards. Another clash between drug gangs last month in the coastal city of Esmeraldas resulted in at least 17 deaths. Officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding yesterday’s riot and have promised increased security measures to prevent further violence. Authorities have stated they will continue to work to restore order and ensure the safety of both inmates and staff within the prison system.
