A potential shift in Nintendo’s physical game media strategy is unfolding as developers begin receiving Switch 2 development kits. Game publisher ININ Games initially announced the forthcoming *R-Type Dimensions 3* woudl ship on a standard game card, eliminating the previously anticipated need for a separate “game key card” used in some Switch titles [[3]]. However, the company has since clarified that Nintendo has not officially confirmed increased storage capacity for the new system, though the game will still release on a single card.
Inin Games, the developer of R-Type Dimensions 3 for Nintendo Switch 2, has announced that the game will be distributed on a single SD card, eliminating the need for a separate Game Key Card.
Initially, Inin Games stated that Nintendo had increased the storage capacity of SD cards for the Switch 2, allowing the company to release R-Type Dimensions 3 on a single card without requiring a Game Key Card. However, this change would have resulted in a $10 (approximately 320 Japanese Yen) price increase compared to the digital version.
The company has since issued a revised statement clarifying that Nintendo has not yet officially confirmed an increase in Switch 2 game card storage capacity. Despite this, Inin Games confirmed that the upcoming release of R-Type Dimensions III will indeed be distributed as a game card.
Currently, development units of Switch 2 game cards are limited to a capacity of 64GB. This development comes as game distribution methods continue to evolve, with physical media facing ongoing challenges from digital downloads and streaming services.
