Budapest – A newcomer is set to challenge established political forces in Hungary as Márk Radnai, a vice president of the recently formed Tisza Party, enters the parliamentary race in Komárom-Esztergom 2nd electoral district. Radnai’s candidacy adds another dimension to the political landscape, notably given his background as a figure in the Hungarian arts and entertainment industry. The district,a key battleground previously held by Fidesz, will see a contest between Radnai, social worker Enikő Illés,and environmental engineer Norbert Németh.

A rising political figure in Hungary is entering the race for a parliamentary seat, adding another layer to the country’s evolving political landscape. Márk Radnai, a vice president of the Tisza Party, will contest the seat in the Komárom-Esztergom 2nd electoral district, according to confirmations reported by Telex.

Radnai’s candidacy was subsequently announced on the district’s Facebook page. He will be competing against Enikő Illés, a social worker and educator, and Norbert Németh, an environmental engineer. The district was previously won by Gábor Erős of the Fidesz party in 2022, who secured nearly 50% of the vote, while Tibor Nunkovics, representing a coalition of opposition parties, received 38.80%.

Radnai was elected as one of the Tisza Party’s vice presidents in July 2024, after becoming involved with the party through his work organizing a March 15 event at the request of Péter Magyar, the party’s founder. “I saw the interview on Partizán and then on Telex. I received a phone call 48 hours before the March 15 event asking what I was doing on Friday afternoon. I said I was going to the protest. ‘Could you organize it?’ they asked. I said yes,” Radnai explained. Since then, he has been a key organizer for Tisza Party events and also contributed to the development of the Tisza Világ app.

Before entering politics, Radnai had a career in the arts. He graduated from the University of Theatre and Film Arts in 2012, studying acting in the class of Gábor Máté. He also briefly enrolled in a directing program with Székely Gábor and Viktor Bodó, but left after a few years. He founded the 011 Creator Group, a theater collective, and later directed television series, including the second season of “Korhatáros szerelem” (Limited Love) and “Drága örökösök” (Dear Heirs).

Radnai also appeared as an actor in series such as “Munkaügyek” (Work Affairs) and “Hacktion: Újratöltve” (Hacktion: Reloaded). During the COVID-19 pandemic, he created SzínházTV, a streaming platform offering high-quality recordings of theatrical performances, though the service has since ceased operations. The platform’s creation garnered attention for providing access to the arts during a period of widespread closures.

Radnai previously made headlines in 2015 following a dispute with a theater critic. After receiving a negative review, he reportedly threatened to break the fingers of Tamás Koltai, a critic for Élet és Irodalom (Life and Literature).

The political connections within Radnai’s family also extend to Hungary’s right-wing political scene. His father, László Radnai, previously served as the communications director for the Jobbik party. Prior to that, he worked as an advertising professional and communications consultant for the SZDSZ, the MSZP, and on multiple occasions for Fidesz after 2002, as seen in a past interview. This history highlights the complex and shifting allegiances within Hungarian political communication.
