Resident Evil 9 & Indiana Jones: Nintendo Switch 2 Limits Violence in Gameplay Demos

Footage from Nintendo’s recent Switch 2 showcase raised questions among viewers and industry analysts regarding deliberately limited gameplay demonstrations. Specifically, gameplay of Resident Evil 9 and Indiana Jones and teh Grate Circle featured characters with unusually poor aim, leading to speculation about a potential effort to curate the level of violence shown during the presentation. The presentation contrasted sharply with a simultaneous demo of Cyberpunk 2: Ultimate Edition, which showcased accurate controls and combat.

Nintendo’s recent showcase of upcoming Switch 2 titles sparked discussion among viewers, though it didn’t deliver the highly anticipated “full-scale” Nintendo Direct many expected. The event highlighted games from third-party developers heading to the new console, but a curious detail regarding gameplay footage of Resident Evil 9 caught the attention of many. Despite expectations for a showcase of the game’s capabilities, protagonist Leon S. Kennedy appeared remarkably inaccurate with firearms, consistently missing targets at close range.

While titles like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered were notably absent from the Switch 2 lineup, the apparent aiming issues in Resident Evil 9: Requiem raised eyebrows. Footage showed Leon engaging zombies with both firearms and melee weapons, yet consistently failing to hit his targets. In some instances, the player demonstrably moved the crosshair away from the enemy before firing.

Nintendo May Have Limited Violence for the Showcase

The unusual inaccuracy prompted speculation online, with many joking about Leon’s declining skills. However, industry analyst Stephen Totilo of GameFile pointed out that such demonstrations are atypical for official presentations, which usually aim to showcase a game’s mechanics effectively. Totilo suggested the issue may stem from a deliberate effort to reduce the level of graphic violence displayed during the event, particularly given Capcom’s history of including dismemberment features in its games.

The pattern of missed shots extended to melee attacks, which often failed to connect or were cut short before impact. This deliberate limitation on visible violence wasn’t isolated to Resident Evil. Similar constraints were applied to gameplay footage of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, where the character was shown firing at the water instead of enemies during a boat chase sequence. This suggests a broader approach to content presentation.

The contrast was particularly striking when compared to a demonstration of Cyberpunk 2: Ultimate Edition, where developers showcased the game’s functionality with the Joy-Con controllers, including accurate grenade throws, gunplay, and melee combat. CD Projekt Red’s presentation highlighted the precision of the controls without any apparent limitations. The Nintendo Direct event was rated PEGI/Mature 18 in both the Spanish and US versions.

Despite the unusual gameplay demonstrations, the Nintendo Direct signaled that the company intends to compete with PlayStation and Xbox in attracting major third-party titles to its new console, even if it means showcasing characters with seemingly diminished aiming abilities. The move underscores the ongoing challenge of balancing game content with platform-specific content guidelines.
