Trump Administration Considers Military Action Against Venezuela and Colombia Over Drug Trafficking

Washington D.C. – The Trump administration is weighing potential military operations in Venezuela and Colombia targeting drug cartels and leaders involved in trafficking, with President Trump stating he may order action without seeking a formal declaration of war from Congress.

During an interview today on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan,” Senator Lindsey Graham revealed President Trump informed him yesterday of plans to brief Congress upon his return from Asia regarding potential military operations. Graham stated, “President Trump’s made a decision that Maduro, the leader of Venezuela, is an indicted drug trafficker, that it’s time for him to go.” He further supported the idea of expanding operations “from the sea to the land,” asserting the President has the authority to act. This comes after Defense Secretary Hegseth ordered the deployment of the Navy’s most advanced aircraft carrier, the Gerald Ford, to Latin America on Friday.

The potential for military intervention has sparked debate, with some lawmakers expressing concern over the lack of congressional consultation. Senator Rand Paul argued a declaration of war would be necessary for broad military action, while Senator Todd Young criticized the lack of transparency. Graham dismissed these concerns, citing historical precedents such as interventions in Panama and Grenada, and defended the President’s authority under Article Two of the Constitution. The debate over executive power and congressional oversight in military matters is a long-standing issue in U.S. foreign policy.

President Trump, in a statement released Friday, indicated a willingness to use lethal force against drug traffickers, saying, “I think we’re just going to kill people that are bringing drugs into our country… We’re going to kill them.” Graham echoed this sentiment, stating, “We’re going to blow them up and kill the people that want to poison America.” The administration’s aggressive stance reflects a growing concern over the opioid crisis and the role of foreign drug cartels in fueling it; according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, overdose deaths continue to be a significant public health crisis.

The administration plans to brief Congress on the details of potential operations, but officials maintain the President has the authority to act independently to protect national security.
