Second Wave of October Social Security Payments Arrives This Week Under New Paperless System

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is distributing the second wave of October benefits this week, marking the first full month of payments under a new policy requiring most recipients to receive funds electronically.

Beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th of their birth month will receive their payments on Wednesday, October 15. The shift to direct deposit or Direct Express cards – mandated by a March executive order from former President Donald Trump with a September 30 compliance deadline – aims to modernize benefit delivery and reduce costs. Those who received Social Security benefits before May 1997 can generally expect payment on the third of the month, unless it falls on a weekend or holiday.

Recipients receiving both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will continue to receive their Social Security benefit on the third of the month, with SSI payments being disbursed on the first. SSI checks were initially sent on October 1, and future SSI payments are scheduled for October 31, December 1, December 31, January 30, and February 27, all in 2026. You can find a complete schedule of Social Security payment dates on the SSA website. This transition impacts millions of Americans who rely on these benefits for essential expenses.

The SSA continues to encourage beneficiaries to sign up for online access to their payment information and manage their accounts through the agency’s website. For more information about the new paperless policy and direct deposit options, visit the USA.gov benefits portal.
