Man Pleads Guilty to Firebombing Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence
Cody Balmer pleaded guilty today to intentionally setting fire to the residence of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
The guilty plea, entered on October 15, 2025, relates to the incident that occurred earlier this year, where a vehicle was driven onto the property and a firebomb was detonated. Balmer reportedly drove a stolen vehicle through security barriers and ignited the device, causing damage to a portion of the governor’s mansion. New video footage released following the plea shows the arson attack unfolding.
Authorities have not yet released a motive for the attack, but the incident prompted increased security measures for the governor and his family. Governor Shapiro, speaking after the plea, stated, “This individual’s actions were a brazen act of violence and a direct threat to my family and our democracy.” The firebombing occurred while Shapiro was not at home. Pennsylvania’s governor plays a critical role in state legislation and emergency management; attacks on the governor’s residence represent a serious breach of security.
Balmer is expected to be sentenced in the coming weeks. He faces significant prison time for the arson and related charges, including attempted murder and aggravated assault. Further details about the case and Pennsylvania’s legal system can be found at the Pennsylvania Courts website. The FBI assisted local authorities in the investigation, highlighting the seriousness of the threat. You can learn more about the FBI’s role in investigating arson here.
Prosecutors stated they will seek a substantial prison sentence to reflect the severity of the crime and deter future attacks.
