Recent clashes in Syria’s Latakia province highlight the continuing instability in the region despite ongoing efforts too consolidate government control. On Wednesday,Syrian security personnel were reportedly injured during a confrontation with individuals described as remnants of the former regime, marking the latest in a series of security incidents in the area over the past several months. These incidents underscore the challenges facing Damascus as it attempts to maintain order and address lingering grievances following years of civil war [[3]].

Several Syrian security personnel were injured Wednesday in clashes with remnants of the former regime in the countryside of Jableh, in the Latakia province. The fighting resulted in fatalities on both sides, according to reports.

Syria’s official Al-Ikhbariya channel confirmed that three members of the former regime’s remnants were killed after clashes with internal security forces in the village of Babda, part of the Jableh countryside. The channel also reported injuries among Syrian security personnel, but did not specify the number.

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) cited an unnamed security source stating that clashes occurred between units of the internal security forces and a “group of outlaws” near Jableh. Further details were not provided.

The incident comes amid a series of recent security developments in the region, including an earlier clash on December 13, which left three members of the internal security forces injured during fighting with “remnants of the former regime” in Jableh.

In August, the Latakia province’s internal security forces announced the death of one of its members and the injury of another following an attack on a security checkpoint in the al-Qardaha area, also in the Latakia countryside.

In March, the Syrian coastal region experienced three days of violent events, with armed groups loyal to the former regime launching attacks on security forces. This led to a large-scale security operation, which, according to the United Nations, resulted in approximately 1400 deaths, the majority of whom were civilians. The development underscores growing regional instability and the ongoing challenges to security in Syria.

The Syrian government formed an investigative committee into the violent events on the coast, identifying 298 individuals allegedly involved in acts of violence that resulted in the deaths of 1426 people. The committee recommended pursuing fugitives and initiating transitional justice procedures.

On December 18, the second session of the public trial of those accused of committing violations during the coastal events was held at the Justice Palace in Halab (Aleppo), as the Syrian government works to achieve justice.

The Syrian government is working to restore security across the country and pursue remnants of the Bashar al-Assad regime, who are causing security disturbances.
