New York Households Need Over $619,000 Annual Income to Be in Top 5%
A new study reveals that New York households must earn $619,178 annually to be considered among the state’s top 5% of earners, highlighting the significant income disparity within the state.
The research, which examined data including household median income and average earnings, found that this threshold is 7.3 times the current median annual household income in New York, which stands at $84,578. While New York ranks high, it isn’t the most expensive state to reach the top 5%; Connecticut leads the nation with a required income of $637,673. California and Massachusetts followed closely, with income requirements of $619,938 and $619,385 respectively, while New Jersey rounded out the top five at $616,334.
The concentration of high earners in the tri-state area – New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut – underscores its continued role as a center of wealth and economic power in the United States. At the other end of the spectrum, West Virginia has the lowest income requirement to join the top 5%, at $330,270, roughly 5.7 times the state’s median household income of $57,917. Understanding income distribution is crucial for policymakers addressing economic inequality, as explored by the Brookings Institution.
