Severe winter weather is causing major disruptions to travel across Bulgaria, with the Trakia motorway experiencing notable delays. Reports indicate a complete standstill for motorists approximately 42 miles from Sofia, as heavy snowfall and uncleared roadways hamper movement. The Road Infrastructure Agency is deploying over 500 vehicles nationwide to address the hazardous conditions, but drivers are advised to exercise extreme caution and expect lengthy delays [[1]].
Drivers are reporting complete gridlock, stating, “We are not moving.” The difficult conditions on the Trakia motorway are attributed to inclement weather.
Earlier reports indicated slowed traffic on the Trakia motorway near Ihtiman, also in the direction of Sofia. Several tractor-trailers have reportedly become stuck, blocking lanes and causing significant backups. The disruption highlights the challenges of winter travel in the region.
The Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) stated earlier that over 515 snow removal vehicles are currently working to clear roadways throughout the country.
