Trump Calls for Death Penalty for Democrats After Military Loyalty Pledge

Recent political discourse has been inflamed by a video shared by Donald Trump, depicting imagery some interpret as calling for violence against his political opponents. This prompted swift and strong condemnation from numerous Democratic lawmakers, who expressed serious concern over the rhetoric. Together, allies of the former president have dismissed the criticism, framing the video and the backlash as politically motivated attacks. The following details responses from both sides of the issue, highlighting the escalating tensions surrounding the situation.

Former President Donald Trump sparked controversy Thursday by accusing six Democratic lawmakers of sedition and suggesting they deserve the death penalty. The accusations stem from the lawmakers’ recent call for the military to defend the Constitution and disregard unlawful orders.

The lawmakers, all veterans of the armed forces and intelligence communities, appeared in a video released this week addressing members of the military.

“The American people need you to defend our laws and our Constitution,” Senator Elissa Slotkin wrote alongside the 90-second video on her social media accounts. This call to action comes amid ongoing debate about the appropriate role of the military in civilian affairs.

Senator Mark Kelly and Representatives Jason Crow, Chris Deluzio, Maggie Goodlander, and Chrissy Houlahan also appear in the video. All six are seen as potential candidates for higher office.

Trump shared an article about the video Thursday on social media, adding his own comment that the message was “really bad and dangerous for our country.”

He called for the lawmakers to be arrested and tried, and escalated the rhetoric by stating it was “seditious behavior, punishable by death.”

Trump also shared over a dozen posts from other accounts criticizing the Democrats, including one stating: “I would hang them, as George Washington would!!!”.

The lawmakers responded to the threat, stating they would not be intimidated.

Reactions to Trump’s Remarks on Capital Punishment for Sedition

Democrats swiftly reacted, criticizing the former president’s words, which also drew concern from some Republicans. The statements raise questions about the current political climate and the potential for escalating rhetoric.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer warned in a speech on the Senate floor that the former president was “pouring gasoline on a country already soaked in political gasoline.”

“Donald Trump must immediately delete these unhinged posts on social media and retract his violent rhetoric before someone gets killed,” declared House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said the former president’s statements were “over the top,” while also noting the Democrats’ video was “despicable.”

Republican Senator Rand Paul acknowledged he didn’t think it was “a good idea to talk about jailing political opponents, or hanging them, or anything else.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, stated, however, that he did not believe Trump was inciting violence with his social media posts.

In his view, the former president was simply “defining a crime” and calling the Democrats’ video “highly inappropriate.”

“Think about the threat this poses to our national security and what it means for our institution,” Johnson added.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt focused on the Democrats’ message, which she said “may be punishable by law.”

Leavitt added that any incitement to “challenge the chain of command, to not follow lawful orders” is “very dangerous for members of Congress in office, and they need to be held accountable, and that’s what the president wants.”

What Did the Democratic Lawmakers Say in the Video?

Using edited clips of statements from each member, the lawmakers introduce themselves and outline their backgrounds.

The Trump administration “is pitting our uniformed military against American citizens,” they assert, and urge service members to “refuse unlawful orders” and “defend our laws.”

The lawmakers conclude the video by addressing the military with the phrase: “Don’t abandon ship,” a phrase from the War of 1812 attributed to the last words of a U.S. Navy captain to his crew.

While the lawmakers did not mention specific circumstances in the video, its release coincides with the Trump administration’s ongoing attempts to deploy National Guard troops to U.S. cities for various functions, though some deployments have been withdrawn and others are stalled by legal challenges.

Following the widespread controversy, the six lawmakers issued a joint statement Thursday assuring they would not be intimidated.

“The most revealing thing is that the president believes reiterating the law is a crime punishable by death. Our military must know they have our support as they uphold their oath to the Constitution and their obligation to only follow lawful orders. It’s not only the right thing to do, it’s our duty,” they said.

“I think when the vast majority of Americans understand that it’s in their hands to reject this kind of rhetoric and this kind of threat, then we will achieve change,” Senator Slotkin said during an event.

“It’s a moment where Democrats, Republicans, and everyone else in the country needs to condemn his calls for political violence,” Deluzio said on CNN.

“We have to take seriously everything Donald Trump says. He makes a lot of promises, but he does follow through on some of them,” Representative Crow noted on the same network.

Allies of Trump Respond to Democrats’ Video

Prior to Trump’s controversial statements, some of his allies had already criticized the video.

White House Policy Director Stephen Miller said Wednesday on Fox News that the message was an “insurrection, plain and simple, direct and unequivocal,” and claimed it represented “a general call for rebellion by the CIA and the United States Armed Forces, by Democrat lawmakers.”

One day prior, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell called the video “TDS Phase 4,” referencing “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” a term used by the former president to describe voters so angry and opposed to him that they are unable to see anything good in his actions.

Pentagon Press Secretary Sean Parnell refuted the theory that unlawful orders were being issued.
