Donald Trump Sparks Outrage with Post Following Rob Reiner’s Death, Even Among Republicans
The deaths of director Rob Reiner and his wife have sent shockwaves through Hollywood, but a subsequent post by former President Donald Trump has drawn widespread condemnation, even from within his own party.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump ignited controversy with a statement regarding the deaths of director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele. Trump suggested on his online platform, “Truth Social,” that the couple’s deaths were linked to Reiner’s vocal criticism of the former president.
In his post, Trump wrote that Reiner “reportedly died from the rage he caused in others by his massive, unwavering, and incurable affliction of a mentally debilitating disease known as Trump Derangement Syndrome.” The former president offered no evidence to support his claims.
The statement drew criticism from across the political spectrum, including from members of his own party. “Regardless of how one felt about Rob Reiner, this is a deeply inappropriate and disrespectful discourse about a man who was brutally murdered,” Republican U.S. Congressman Thomas Massie wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. Fellow Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene added: “This is a family tragedy, it’s not about politics or political enemies.”
Reiner Was a Vocal Critic of Donald Trump
The 78-year-old Reiner and his wife, photographer Michele Singer, were found dead Sunday with stab wounds at their Los Angeles home. Authorities reported no signs of forced entry. Their son, Nick, is currently under investigation in connection with their deaths. Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell stated Monday that the 32-year-old had been arrested on suspicion of murdering his parents.
Director Rob Reiner is known for classic films such as “When Harry Met Sally…” (1989) and “A Few Good Men” (1993). Reiner was also a prominent liberal activist and frequently and sharply criticized Trump on a range of issues. In a 2017 interview with Variety, he stated: “Donald Trump is the least qualified person to ever hold the office of President of the United States. He is mentally unfit to hold this office. He doesn’t understand how government works, and he doesn’t even care to learn.”
Reiner’s Son Under Suspicion in Deaths
Reiner was 78 years old. His wife, Michele, who worked as a photographer, was reportedly between 65 and 70 years old. The couple, married since 1989, had three children: Jake, Nick, and Romy. Reiner also adopted the daughter of his first wife, Penny Marshall.
According to the “Los Angeles Times,” Nick Reiner had been living in a guesthouse on his parents’ property. Friends of the family reported that the three were together at a party Saturday evening hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien, where the son allegedly exhibited erratic behavior and engaged in an argument with his father.
