Major Earthquake Strikes Off Coast of Japan

A significant earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.8 struck off the eastern coast of Japan today, triggering tsunami warnings across a wide region.

The quake occurred at 2025-10-12 16:29:00 JST, with the epicenter located approximately 200 kilometers (124 miles) east of Sendai, Honshu, at a depth of 60 kilometers (37 miles), according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Tsunami warnings, ranging in height from 0.3 to 3 meters, have been issued for the prefectures of Miyagi, Fukushima, and Iwate. Residents in coastal areas are being urged to evacuate to higher ground immediately.

“We are currently assessing the extent of the damage, but initial reports indicate strong shaking was felt in several prefectures, including Tokyo,” stated a government spokesperson during a press conference. “Our priority is the safety of our citizens, and we are mobilizing all available resources for rescue and relief efforts.” The earthquake comes nearly 14 years after the devastating 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, which prompted increased investment in disaster preparedness. The United States Geological Survey is providing data and analysis alongside Japanese authorities.

Power outages have been reported in some areas, and transportation networks, including the Shinkansen bullet train service, have been temporarily suspended for safety inspections. The Japan Meteorological Agency continues to monitor the situation closely for potential aftershocks and further tsunami activity.

Authorities will continue to provide updates as the situation unfolds and are urging residents to remain vigilant and follow evacuation orders.
