US Airlines Continue Flight Cancellations for Third Consecutive Day

US airlines are experiencing a third day of significant flight disruptions today, November 9, 2025, due to a combination of weather and staffing issues, impacting travel plans for thousands of passengers.

Major carriers including United, American, and Southwest have preemptively cancelled hundreds of flights, primarily in regions expecting severe winter weather. According to flight tracking data, over 800 flights within, into, or out of the United States were cancelled as of 9:00 PM EST, with hundreds more delayed. The disruptions began yesterday and show no immediate signs of abating. This comes during a peak travel period as the holiday season approaches, exacerbating the impact on travelers.

A spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration stated that the agency is “closely monitoring the situation and working with airlines to minimize disruptions,” adding that safety remains the top priority. Airlines are offering waivers for change fees and rebooking options, but passengers are facing long hold times and crowded airports. The ongoing cancellations are attributed to a confluence of factors, including a developing winter storm system moving across the central US and lingering staffing shortages at some airlines. Recent reports have highlighted ongoing challenges in recruiting and retaining pilots and other critical personnel. Airlines anticipate the situation could continue into tomorrow as the weather system progresses, and are advising passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport.

Officials are urging travelers to remain patient and allow for extra travel time, as the recovery process is expected to be gradual.
