Silicon Valley Investors Increase Focus on Brown University Startups
Brown University is attracting growing interest from prominent Silicon Valley venture capital firms, signaling a potential boost for the university’s burgeoning student entrepreneurship ecosystem.
Venture capital firms including Pear VC and Y Combinator have recently expanded their presence on campus through student fellowships and information sessions, generating excitement among student founders. Pear VC hosted its first information session at Brown this fall, promoting its PearX accelerator, which offers up to $2 million in funding and mentorship to pre-seed startups. “You’re seeing more and more that young people — students — can create category-defining companies,” said Pear VC Partner Harris Stolzenberg. Y Combinator also accepted four Brown students into its fall 2025 batch, demonstrating the increasing recognition of Brown’s entrepreneurial talent.
This increased investment comes as students seek funding beyond initial grants from Brown’s Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship. Many students are also becoming involved in the venture capital world themselves; Serena Saxena ’27, a student scout for Anthos Capital, noted that Brown student startups often prioritize “thoughtful creation” over rapid growth, approaching entrepreneurship “with curiosity, social awareness and collaboration.” The growing interest from venture capital firms could lead to increased funding opportunities and resources for Brown’s student entrepreneurs, potentially accelerating the development of innovative new companies. Brown’s success with alumni-founded Figma, a popular web design tool, has also drawn attention to the university’s potential. Learn more about entrepreneurship at Brown University.
Brown’s student-run Van Wickle Ventures has already sourced over 700 Brown-founded companies and invested in 13 startups, utilizing funds from the university’s endowment. According to Co-Director Sunav Nambiar ’26, the connection to Brown’s endowment provides credibility to new ventures. The influx of venture capital interest is expected to continue, with firms seeking to tap into the innovative spirit of the Brown community.
