Weapons Cache Linked to Hamas Discovered in Vienna, Suspect Arrested in London

Austrian authorities have uncovered a weapons cache in Vienna believed to be connected to the Palestinian militant group Hamas, intended for use in potential terrorist attacks across Europe, officials announced today.

A 39-year-old British citizen, identified by German authorities as Mohammed A., was arrested in London on Monday in connection with the cache. Investigations revealed he allegedly received five handguns and ammunition from Abdel Al G., who was arrested in Germany last month on suspicion of plotting attacks against Israeli or Jewish institutions there. According to German prosecutors, Mohammed A. transported the weapons to Austria and stored them in a rented storage room in Vienna. This discovery highlights the growing concern over the potential for Hamas to extend its operations beyond Israel and the Palestinian territories.

The weapons cache, consisting of five handguns and ten magazines, was discovered as part of an international investigation coordinated by Austria’s Directorate for State Security and Intelligence (DSN). “The current case shows once again that the Directorate for State Security and Intelligence has an excellent international network and takes consistent action against all forms of extremism,” stated Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner. “The mission is clear: zero tolerance for terrorists.” Hamas has previously denied any connection to the suspects arrested in Germany, calling the allegations “baseless.” You can learn more about Hamas and its activities from the U.S. Department of State.

The British National Crime Agency confirmed the arrest in central London and stated the suspect remains in custody pending a court appearance on Monday. Following extradition from Great Britain, Mohammed A. will be brought before an investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice in Germany, according to officials. The National Counter Terrorism Center continues to monitor potential threats globally.

Authorities stated the suspect will be extradited to Germany, where he will face further investigation and potential charges.
