Who Created Bitcoin? The Hunt for Satoshi Nakamoto

The enduring mystery of Bitcoin’s origin has resurfaced following a high-profile investigation into the identity of its elusive creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. A report from The New York Times has identified Adam Back, a 55-year-old British cryptographer and CEO of Blockstream, as the individual behind the pseudonym.

The investigation, led by journalist John Carreyrou, suggests that the linguistic patterns and technical markers of the Bitcoin founder align with Back. According to the report, Carreyrou spent over a year analyzing archived forum posts, early internet records, and thousands of emails. The findings highlighted the use of British spellings and expressions in Nakamoto’s writing, as well as specific grammar quirks and technical language that mirror Back’s own style.

Beyond linguistic analysis, the report points to Back’s invention of Hashcash—a critical precursor cited in the original Bitcoin white paper—as a primary link. Carreyrou similarly noted Back’s relative silence during Bitcoin’s initial launch and his subsequent emergence within the community after Nakamoto disappeared from public view. While artificial intelligence tools were used to analyze these writing patterns, the reporter clarified that the findings were not definitive and relied on a broader set of circumstantial evidence.

Adam Back has firmly rejected these claims. In a post on X, Back stated, “i’m not satoshi, but I was early in laser focus on the positive societal implications of cryptography, online privacy and electronic cash.” His company further supported this denial in a statement, asserting that “Dr. Adam Back has consistently stated that he is not Satoshi Nakamoto,” while emphasizing that his foundational contributions to the Bitcoin network are a matter of record rather than speculation.

The ongoing effort to unmask Nakamoto underscores the profound impact of Bitcoin’s decentralized architecture on the global digital economy. As one of the most influential figures in the history of cryptography, the identity of the founder remains a focal point for those tracking the evolution of electronic cash and privacy-enhancing technologies.

Back, who holds a PhD in distributed systems from the University of Exeter and co-founded Blockstream in 2014, continues to be a prominent figure in the cypherpunk movement. Despite the renewed scrutiny from the press, the identity of the original author of the Bitcoin white paper remains officially unconfirmed.
